LVT or Laminate: Which Is Best for Busy Family Homes?

June 24, 2026

Luxury vinyl tile and laminate are two of the most popular choices for family homes, and for good reason. Both look fantastic, both are practical, and both are far easier to live with than many people expect. If you are weighing them up for a home in Bromley, Beckenham or anywhere across South London, here is how they compare.

Water resistance

This is the biggest difference. Luxury vinyl tile is waterproof, which makes it ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and busy entrances. Quality laminate is more water resistant than it used to be and copes well with everyday spills, but it is still best kept out of rooms that see standing water. If you want one floor that can go almost anywhere, LVT has the edge.

Durability and wear

Both are hard wearing, but they handle wear differently. LVT is softer underfoot and resists dents, scratches and scuffs very well, which suits homes with children and pets. Laminate has a tough wear layer that stands up to heavy foot traffic and is very resistant to scratching, so it is a strong choice for hallways and living rooms.

Comfort and sound

LVT tends to feel warmer and quieter underfoot, especially when fitted over a good underlay. Laminate can sound a little harder, although the right underlay makes a noticeable difference. For bedrooms and snugs where comfort matters, many people lean towards LVT.

Cost

Laminate is usually the more affordable of the two, which makes it a great value option for larger areas or rental properties. LVT generally costs a little more but rewards you with better water resistance and a more premium feel. The right choice depends on your rooms and your budget.

Our verdict

For most busy family homes we suggest LVT in kitchens, bathrooms and high traffic areas, with laminate as a smart, budget friendly option for bedrooms and lounges. Every home is different though.
